The tragic news was confirmed by law enforcement authorities. Nancy Metayer Bowen, vice mayor of Coral Springs, was found dead on Wednesday morning. Her husband has been taken into custody, police said.
The body of Nancy Metayer Bowen, who was of Haitian origin, was discovered at her home around 10 a.m. on April 1, 2026, following a welfare check, according to Coral Springs Police Chief Brad Mock, who spoke to journalists during a press conference.
Authorities did not provide details regarding the circumstances of her death but indicated that it is being investigated as a domestic violence incident.
Nancy Metayer Bowen, elected in 2020 and again in 2024, was the first Black American and Haitian woman to serve as a commissioner in Coral Springs, Florida. She was appointed in November for a second term as vice mayor.
She was known for consistently speaking out in defense of Haitian migrants, particularly in matters related to Temporary Protected Status. An investigation has been opened to determine the circumstances surrounding her death.
