During his official visit to Washington, Prime Minister Alix Didier Fils-Aimé said he has initiated discussions aimed at shifting the approach to international aid to Haiti.
In an interview with Le Nouvelliste on Tuesday, April 21, 2026, he advocated for a transition from humanitarian aid to trade as a long-term solution.
“For decades, aid has been sent to the country. While there is a difficult situation and people in need, the long-term solution is to provide opportunities for individuals to create wealth by starting businesses,” the Prime Minister said, emphasizing the importance of access to international markets.
Fils-Aimé stressed that this paradigm shift must be carried out transparently and for the benefit of the country, also highlighting the need to create favorable conditions to encourage investment from the Haitian diaspora.
During the visit, the Prime Minister met with several U.S. officials, including Gregory Murphy. Discussions focused on the importance of stability and predictability in trade programs, particularly HOPE/HELP, to preserve jobs and support the productive sector.
He also emphasized the need for sustainable solutions based on economic recovery and employment, confirming plans for a multi-year renewal of the HOPE/HELP program.
According to him, these economic efforts are essential for strengthening stability and security: “The first sign of security is ensuring that people can work and meet their needs. Security without jobs will not be viable.”
