The Minister of Planning and External Cooperation (MPCE), Dr. Sandra Paulemon, is representing Haiti at the first edition of the United Nations Peacebuilding Week, taking place from June 22 to 26 at UN Headquarters in New York. Leading an official delegation, the minister is participating in this international gathering as part of the Haitian government’s efforts to strengthen its presence within multilateral institutions and mobilize greater international support for peace, security, stability, and sustainable development in the country.
Held under the theme “Partnerships for Innovation, Inclusion and Impact,” the event also marks the 20th anniversary of the Peacebuilding Commission (PBC) and the Peacebuilding Fund (PBF), two major United Nations mechanisms dedicated to conflict prevention and the reconstruction of fragile states. During the various sessions, the Haitian delegation will take part in high-level discussions on financing peace initiatives, the links between development, humanitarian action, and security, as well as mechanisms aimed at improving the effectiveness of international interventions in crisis contexts.
Haitian representatives will also participate in the work of the Peacebuilding Commission, the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), and General Assembly debates on sustaining peace. A key highlight of the diplomatic mission will be Dr. Sandra Paulemon’s address before the Peacebuilding Commission on June 25. Her remarks will focus on twenty years of UN engagement in this field, with particular emphasis on innovation, inclusion, and the impact of implemented programs.
On the sidelines of the meetings, the minister is expected to meet with several UN officials and international partners, including Elizabeth Spehar, as well as representatives of the Peacebuilding Support Office (PBSO), the Peacebuilding Fund, and various international financial institutions. According to figures released by the United Nations, more than US$50 million has been invested in Haiti since 2008 through approximately twenty projects funded by the Peacebuilding Fund. These initiatives have supported social cohesion, local governance, conflict prevention, and the strengthening of community resilience.
Through this mission, the minister seeks to promote a Haitian vision of peacebuilding based on strengthening institutions, social inclusion, territorial development, and the creation of sustainable economic opportunities. She also intends to advocate for better alignment of international assistance with the priorities defined by Haiti’s national authorities
