Clashes in Cul-de-Sac plain: an economic war between gangs, says Pastor Hénock Joseph

Clashes between rival gangs in the Cul-de-Sac plain are driven by a struggle for control over the area’s economic resources, according to Pastor Hénock Joseph.

Speaking on the Panel Magik program on Wednesday, April 22, the pastor highlighted the strategic importance of areas such as Terre Noire, Sarthe, and Pyè 6, which have become key targets for armed groups. He noted that Pyè 6 is attracting residents fleeing insecurity in central Cité Soleil, while Sarthe hosts major companies including E-Power, La Couronne, MSC, and Séjournée.

According to Joseph, gangs from Canaan, Chen Mechan, and 400 Mawozo have formed an alliance to confront groups from Pyè 6 and Terre Noire in a bid to gain territorial control. The Canaan group, led by Jeff, also known as “Gwo Lwa,” is reportedly in conflict with Pyè 6 gangs over a toll point in the area.

The situation has worsened since early March, particularly following clashes on March 7 and 8 in Village Renaissance between Canaan and Pyè 6 groups.

The violence has paralyzed activities in the region since last weekend. Many residents remain confined to their homes, while others have fled. Some families have taken refuge in a church in downtown Cité Soleil.

Although no precise toll is available, there are confirmed casualties and material damage among civilians. Reinforcements from Belekou have reportedly joined Pyè 6 and Terre Noire groups, and involvement of the Izo gang has not been ruled out.

Clashes were still ongoing on Wednesday, with heavy gunfire reported in several areas. Pastor Hénock Joseph issued an urgent appeal for authorities to intervene and restore normalcy.
