Haiti and Japan celebrated the 70th anniversary of their diplomatic relations on Tuesday, April 28, 2026, marking a partnership officially established in 1956. On this occasion, Prime Minister Alix Didier Fils-Aimé highlighted the strong ties of friendship, mutual respect, and cooperation that define the bilateral relationship.

In his speech, the head of government reaffirmed Haiti’s commitment to strengthening this partnership, particularly by seeking increased support from Japan in efforts to restore lasting security in the country.

Beyond security, the prime minister called for a revival of economic and trade relations, emphasizing that they should reach the same level of excellence as the existing political dialogue. He also encouraged greater involvement from the private sectors of both countries through structured public-private partnerships.

He further called on civil society actors to continue and intensify initiatives aimed at strengthening cultural and human ties between the two nations.

On the sidelines of the ceremony, a memorandum of cooperation in diplomatic training was signed between the foreign ministries of both countries, represented by Raina Forbin for Haiti and Toshimitsu Motegi for Japan.

The ceremony also highlighted progress achieved through Haitian-Japanese cooperation in key sectors such as agriculture, health, education, culture, and gender equality.

The prime minister concluded by praising Japan’s continued commitment to Haiti, particularly in supporting efforts to create a secure environment for credible, inclusive, and transparent elections.
