The Haitian Group for the Study of Kaposi’s Sarcoma and Opportunistic Infections (GHESKIO) celebrated its 44th anniversary on Thursday, May 7, 2026, at the Institute of Infectious Diseases and Reproductive Health (IMIS) in Tabarre. The event brought together staff, partners, and friends to commemorate more than four decades of dedicated service to the Haitian community in a festive and convivial atmosphere.

Executive Director Dr. Jean William Pape praised the dedication of the pioneers who launched the initiative in the early 1980s. He traced the institution’s evolution toward a “global health” approach, which now includes education through the Prince Albert II of Monaco School. Amidst Haiti’s ongoing security crisis, Dr. Pape framed the celebration around resilience: “After the January 12, 2010 earthquake, I said we would remain standing, and we did. Today, I am firmly convinced we will overcome the gangs.” During the ceremony, 23 staff members were honored for over 25 years of service.

Founded on May 2, 1982, by nine Haitian doctors seeking to understand the emerging AIDS crisis, GHESKIO has since expanded its scope to include tuberculosis, maternal health, and chronic conditions like cardiovascular disease. Beyond patient care, the centers have trained thousands of clinicians and tens of thousands of community health workers, significantly strengthening the Haitian healthcare system.
