The Haitian government plans to rely on the deployment of the Gang Repression Force (FRG) to facilitate the return of airlines to Toussaint Louverture International Airport and resume international flights.
The announcement was made by Prime Minister Alix Didier Fils-Aimé during an interview with Le Nouvelliste on Tuesday, April 21, 2026, in Washington.
The Prime Minister stated that FRG personnel will be deployed at the airport to ensure security. “If FRG agents are deployed to secure the airport, there is no reason why U.S. airlines should not return,” he said.
Since February 2024, air traffic in Port-au-Prince has been heavily disrupted, worsening in November 2024 when aircraft were hit by gunfire on the runway amid renewed gang activity under the “Viv ansanm” coalition.
Following these incidents, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) imposed restrictions on U.S. airlines through a NOTAM, which remains in effect until September 3, 2026.
Other carriers have also been impacted. In January 2026, ZED Airlines suspended operations after two of its aircraft were struck by bullets, while Sunrise Airways has repeatedly halted flights due to security concerns.
