During his visit to Washington, Haitian Prime Minister Alix Didier Fils-Aimé advocated for the issuance of visas to Haitian nationals wishing to attend the 2026 FIFA World Cup matches.
He stated that this was the second time he raised the request, having previously discussed it with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio during a CARICOM meeting. According to him, U.S. authorities have promised to provide proposals through diplomatic channels.
Fils-Aimé emphasized that it is legitimate for Haitian supporters to back their national team, 52 years after Haiti’s first World Cup appearance. Haiti is set to play group-stage matches in U.S. cities including Boston, Philadelphia, and Atlanta against Scotland, Brazil, and Morocco.
The request comes amid stricter U.S. immigration policies affecting several countries, including Haiti.
The Prime Minister said he would continue advocating for this cause if no progress is made, highlighting the national significance of fan participation.
He also confirmed that he will attend at least two matches, including the game against Scotland, following an invitation from FIFA President Gianni Infantino.
