Despite Kylian Mbappé pulling one back, Bayern Munich secured a 2–1 victory away at Real Madrid this Tuesday night in the first leg of the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals, giving them an advantage heading into the second leg.
The 29th meeting between Real Madrid and Bayern Munich in the Champions League—a record, including 26 in knockout stages—lived up to expectations at the Santiago Bernabéu, where Bayern delivered a solid and deserved performance.
Although the opening goal came just four minutes before halftime through Luis Díaz, Bayern had already dominated proceedings and could have scored earlier. Michael Olise saw his free-kick deflected for a corner (7th minute), while Dayot Upamecano missed a close-range opportunity (10th minute).
Real Madrid responded through Kylian Mbappé, who was twice denied by Manuel Neuer (16th and 66th minutes), the German goalkeeper producing key saves to keep Bayern ahead. Meanwhile, Vinícius Jr. struggled to find accuracy in front of goal.
The tactical battle between Real Madrid’s transition-based 4-4-2 and Bayern’s possession-oriented 4-2-3-1 clearly favored the German side. Bayern extended their lead immediately after halftime (46th minute) through Harry Kane, capitalizing on their momentum.
Mbappé eventually reduced the deficit in the 74th minute, keeping Real Madrid’s hopes alive ahead of the return leg next week. The Spanish side still holds a slim chance of progressing and potentially facing the winner of PSG vs Liverpool in the semi-finals.

Dayot Upamecano endured a difficult night. After missing an early chance, he struggled defensively, allowing Mbappé space on multiple occasions. A misplaced header nearly gifted Vinícius a goal (61st minute), and he was again beaten in the buildup to Mbappé’s goal (74th minute).
