Barça secured a 2-1 win away at Atlético Madrid tonight, but it was not enough to overturn their 2-0 first-leg defeat. Antoine Griezmann and his teammates will face the winner of the clash between Arsenal and Sporting in the semi-finals.

Mission remontada. After losing 2-0 in the first leg in Catalonia, and having almost sealed the La Liga title this past weekend, FC Barcelona faced a major challenge in this Champions League quarter-final second leg. On the other side, a confident Atlético Madrid believed this could be their year.

Hansi Flick made bold choices, leaving Marcus Rashford and Robert Lewandowski on the bench, opting instead for Fermín López and Ferran Torres in attack. Gavi started in midfield, while Eric García replaced the suspended Pau Cubarsí in central defense. Diego Simeone, without his two starting center-backs (Pubill and Hancko), relied on his attacking duo Antoine Griezmann and Julián Álvarez.

Barça started strongly, with Musso making a crucial save to deny Lamine Yamal in the first minute. However, the young prodigy quickly made an impact, capitalizing on a mistake by Clément Lenglet to open the scoring (0-1, 4’). Barcelona dominated early, and Yamal continued to shine, setting up Dani Olmo, who missed a one-on-one chance (9’).

The pressure paid off when Dani Olmo delivered a perfect pass to Ferran Torres, who smashed the ball into the net to double the lead (0-2, 24’), leveling the aggregate score. Barça looked in control, but Atlético responded. Griezmann initiated a move that led to a cross from Marcos Llorente, finished by Ademola Lookman to pull one back (1-2, 30’).

That goal shifted momentum. Atlético grew into the game, with Griezmann dictating play, while Barcelona lost some of their early fluidity. Despite chances on both sides, including another save by Musso and attempts from Ferran Torres, the first half ended with tension still high.

No comeback

The second half started cautiously. Atlético threatened through Lookman and Álvarez, while Musso continued to deny Barcelona, including another effort from Ferran Torres. A goal from the Barça forward was later ruled out for offside.

As time passed, Barcelona struggled creatively. Dani Olmo and Fermín López became less influential, while Lamine Yamal remained the most dangerous outlet. Pedri, meanwhile, was below his usual standards.

Atlético nearly sealed the tie, but Joan García made a crucial save against Robin Le Normand (74’). Shortly after, Eric García was sent off for a last-man foul on Alexander Sørloth (79’), leaving Barça down to ten men.

With the numerical advantage, Atlético controlled the closing stages. Chances from Nico González and Nahuel Molina went close, while Barcelona could only threaten late through a Lewandowski header and a missed attempt from Ronald Araújo.

In the end, Barcelona’s victory was not enough. Atlético Madrid advances to the semi-finals, while Barça exits the competition.
