Heavy fighting between rival gangs in northern Cité Soleil has claimed at least 80 lives and left nearly 100 people wounded as of Monday, May 11, 2026. Human rights advocate Fritznel Pierre reported these figures on Wednesday, describing the area as a “new lost territory” where all normal activity has ceased. The violence is driven by a criminal coalition including the “400 Mawozo,” “Taliban,” and “Chen Mechan” gangs, who have launched multi-front attacks in the Sarthe and Route Neuf sectors.
According to preliminary data from the International Organization for Migration (IOM), the conflict has forced more than 5,354 residents to flee their homes. While the Haitian National Police (PNH) conducted operations on Monday to push back the bandits and assist trapped civilians in escaping, Pierre noted that these interventions remain primarily “deterrent” in nature. He warned that a total peace has yet to be established, as armed groups continue to loot and burn neighborhoods in retaliation for previous territorial losses.
