Haitian Prime Minister Alix Didier Fils-Aimé reaffirmed from Haiti’s embassy in Washington the government’s commitment to maintaining ongoing dialogue with the Dominican Republic.
In an interview with Le Nouvelliste on Tuesday, April 21, 2026, during his official visit to the United States, the Prime Minister emphasized the critical importance of strengthening ties between the two nations sharing the island.
“It is a necessity to engage in dialogue with our Dominican neighbors,” he said, highlighting that bilateral relations must be built around shared interests such as border management, trade, and security. “We must talk—not by choice, but out of obligation,” he added.
Fils-Aimé also noted that disagreements between the two countries are natural in diplomacy and should not halt discussions, but rather be part of the process.
In this context, Haitian and Dominican authorities met at CODEVI on April 17, 2026, to revive bilateral dialogue and agreed to reopen airspace between the two countries starting May 1.
Delegations from both countries’ foreign ministries discussed key issues including border security, migration, and trade, describing the exchanges as “frank and constructive.”
