The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Worship (MAEC) and the Taiwanese Embassy in Haiti organized a reception on Friday, April 17, 2026, at the Karibe Hotel to celebrate 70 years of relations between the two countries.

The ceremony, brief and solemn yet rich in symbolism, took place in the presence of Prime Minister Alix Didier Fils-Aimé, Foreign Affairs Minister Raina Forbin, Taiwan’s Ambassador to Haiti Cheng-Hao Hu, and members of the diplomatic corps.

In his speech, the Prime Minister expressed the Haitian people’s deep gratitude for the consistent support and enduring friendship of Taiwan. He reaffirmed the government’s intention to elevate the partnership toward higher value-added cooperation. He also paid tribute to Taiwan’s “constant support,” particularly after the devastating January 2010 earthquake and during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Over the decades, this cooperation has materialized in various sectors, including hospital construction, road infrastructure development, access to clean water in remote areas, promotion of renewable energy, and agricultural initiatives.

According to the Prime Minister’s office, key achievements include progress in food security, infrastructure, public health, youth training, institutional strengthening, and agricultural and technological development.

Education was highlighted as a central pillar. Scholarship programs offered by Taiwan to Haitian students were praised as essential for fostering a new generation of development leaders. In a country facing brain drain, these skill transfers represent a crucial long-term investment.

Future prospects

Foreign Affairs Minister Raina Forbin outlined a forward-looking vision centered on global transformations such as digital transition, green energy, and supply chain restructuring.

She emphasized expanding cooperation through precision agriculture technologies, the development of training hubs in artificial intelligence and digital health, and joint investments in renewable energy and port logistics to position Port-au-Prince as a Caribbean hub.

She also highlighted opportunities in cybersecurity and cultural promotion through academic and tourism exchanges.

Both officials stressed the importance of security, linking national stability to the organization of free, inclusive, and credible elections, as well as potential cooperation in prison infrastructure.
