Port-au-Prince, April 13, 2026 — Nearly one hundred intern doctors from the University of the Aristide Foundation (UNIFA) staged a work stoppage at Hôpital Universitaire La Paix, demanding payment of nine months of salary arrears.
Usually mobilized on the front lines, particularly in emergency and pediatric services, these interns denounce what they describe as an “untenable” situation. According to several of them, this prolonged period without pay is severely affecting their living conditions and their ability to fulfill their professional responsibilities.
“We already work under difficult conditions, but without a salary for nine months, it becomes impossible,” said one intern doctor, speaking anonymously.
Although driven by legitimate demands, this strike risks having direct consequences on the hospital’s operations, especially in its most heavily used departments. The absence of these young doctors could slow down patient care and increase pressure on the remaining staff.
So far, no official response has been issued by health authorities. The strikers, for their part, say they remain open to dialogue while maintaining their movement until their demands are met.
In a context where Haiti’s healthcare system is already fragile, this situation once again highlights the structural challenges faced by health professionals, as well as the urgent need for meaningful responses to ensure the continuity of hospital services.
