Tensions rose on Thursday, April 16, 2026, in Saint-Marc, where residents took to the streets to oppose the removal of armored vehicles that police planned to transfer to Port-au-Prince. In a context marked by the growing activity of armed gangs “Gran Grif” and “Kokorat San Ras,” the decision was seen as a direct threat to the region’s security.
These vehicles had initially been deployed in Pont-Sondé, particularly to contain the advance of the “Gran Grif” gang, which is reportedly targeting the strategic area of Cité Nissage Saget. For many locals, the withdrawal of these armored units would have allowed armed groups to advance more rapidly.
On the streets of Saint-Marc, anger was palpable. Several residents denounced what they see as a complete abandonment of the region by central authorities. Some even interpreted the attempted withdrawal as a worrying signal that the Lower Artibonite could be left to the control of gangs.
In recent times, the Artibonite department has faced increasing insecurity, marked by the growing power of gangs. Several areas have been attacked, further weakening the region, which is gradually falling under the control of armed groups.
