The government has declared national mourning from April 14 to 16 following the tragedy that occurred in Milot.
The Haitian government has declared three days of national mourning following the tragedy that occurred on Saturday, April 11 at the Citadelle Laferrière, in the Nord department.
Meeting in an online Council of Ministers session this Sunday, the executive decided that Tuesday, April 14, Wednesday, April 15, and Thursday, April 16, 2026 will be dedicated to remembrance in honor of the victims.
According to figures released by the Haitian National Police, the provisional death toll stands at at least 25, with around thirty people injured.
However, testimonies collected on site suggest a potentially higher toll. Several local sources indicate that bodies were reported at the Milot hospital as well as within the site, though this has not yet been officially confirmed. Dozens of injured individuals, some in critical condition, are currently receiving care, while others are still reported missing.
Given the scale of the situation, the agenda of the Council of Ministers was reduced to essentials, resulting in the adoption without debate of the decree establishing national mourning.
